In the United States in the mid-20th century, the “Red Scare” evolved into the “Lavender Scare.” The Lavender Scare was the forced firing and resignation of thousands of workers in the federal workforce because of their sexual orientation. This panic swept the nation but is rarely mentioned in American history. The lavender scare was the start of a snowball effect that sparked the civil rights movement among the LGBTQIA+ community.
