The Downtown Arts and Music Festival takes place this weekend, Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11, in Paducah’s historic Downtown Arts District. Goodman, whose previous musical incarnations include Savage Radley, formed while she was a student at Murray State University. morning edition Host Daniel Hurt spoke with Goodman ahead of Friday night’s show.
Goodman said that although she currently lives in Murray, she will always call Hickman home. She discovered her love for music while growing up in church in a small country town. “I always tell people that I haven’t been to what people think of as a concert since I was little,” she begins. “I did go to what I considered concerts three times a week, which was going to church with my family. I would say when I was younger, singing in church was where I got my musical education and where I started to identify musical parts. .
Growing up on a farm, the radio was always around, she said, and she listened to the music her parents loved — mostly Neil Young and Stevie Nicks — but she was also exposed to music from local radio stations like Patsy Cline and John Prine. Lynn. While studying at Murray State University, she formed the band Savage Radley with members Stephen Montgomery and Matt Rowan. “We started in 2010 after my grandmother passed away,” she explains. “We started playing and practicing together. That’s where I came in.”
Goodman released two albums under her new solo moniker, old time feeling and Teeth marks. The former is co-produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket fame. The album was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant Goodman’s live performance opportunities were greatly hampered. Still, it gained a broad fan base and even attracted the attention of fellow Kentuckian Tyler Childers, who covered her song “Space and Time.”
“Tyler contacted me out of the blue asking for permission to cover Time and Space,” Goodman said. “Not sure if he just wanted to play the song, but I was at Willie Nelson’s festival and I found out Taylor had cut the song. So, I went to my van and we listened to it. The song my manager and Taylor’s manager, I swore to secrecy for about a year, I was really honored that a songwriter wanted to cut someone else’s song and I thought he did a great job.
Goodman said much of what she wrote during her sophomore year was written during the pandemic. “I named it Teeth marks Because I feel like, all my records – even from Ge Working with Savage Radley – There’s a trajectory of where I come from, how I feel about it and my relationship to it.I would say Teeth marks It’s more of an internal observation of the emotional impact of your experience in a place.So I named this album Teeth marks I’m proud of depicting the marks left by trauma and the impact of experiences. I want the information to be presented the way I want it to be.
While this weekend isn’t Goodman’s first time performing on the Downtown Main Stage, she said it makes sense to return as a headliner. “It’s a full circle,” she said. “I would say we’ll probably go back to Ge Record something. I think they’re going to experience what we’ve been doing in this country for the past three years. I look forward to seeing you all downtown.
