With Mother’s Day approaching on Sunday, Greater Lansing is celebrating with a series of events this weekend, including the Peace Education Center’s annual Peace Mother’s Day Concert, a mother-daughter tea party, and crafts and supplies for last-minute gifts trade show. There’s also a music festival, two new art exhibits, a drag brunch, comedy shows, genealogy workshops and more.
On Friday night, rock musician Mark Grinnell will hold a live music performance at Harrison Roadhouse at 6 o’clock; UrbanBeat’s cover band Atomic Annie and Mash Bar’s cover musician Ben Awrey are both only 7 years old; Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s final performance of this season A concert will be held at 7:30 in Wharton Center’s Cobb Hall; Dave Matthews Band tribute group Trippin’ Billies performs in Grewal Hall No. 224, and pop and rock cover band JP & the Energy’s JP Peters performs at the Peanut Barrel, metal bands Absolute, Means of Entry, One with the Riverbed and Blue Waffle Syrup perform at Mac’s Bar, all at 8:00; hip-hop artist Caskey performs at Green Dot Stables at 9:30; 90’s and early 2000s grunge, pop and rock cover band Off the Ledge will perform at Mash Bar at 10 o’clock. . Lansing Brewing Co.’s rock band Jimmy Likes Pie and Okemos High School’s Mason Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra, both For ages 7; Latin music group Orquesta Ritmo performs at UrbanBeat at 8 p.m.
Stoopfest is an annual DIY music and arts festival that will fill Lansing’s East End with more live music from a variety of genres Friday night and all day Saturday. It will also host its first parade at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, starting at the Allen Neighborhood Center and ending at Hunter Park. For performance schedule and venues, please visit website.
Two new art exhibits will celebrate their opening this weekend: the Central Michigan Art Association’s Volunteer Art Show at Okemos Library, with a reception Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and “Figure It Out : A Study in Body Art” with a reception Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Art Williamston Gallery.
Other art exhibitions on display include the Art Association of Central Michigan’s “Artistic Visions” exhibition at the REACH Studio Art Center, which is open by appointment; the Art Association of Central Michigan’s spring membership show at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center, Open Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; “The LGBTQ+ Artist in Michigan” and “Transitory: A Study Of Human Anatomy & Our Own Empmanence” at the Lansing Art Museum, Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open; ART/5 Painterly Dialogues at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, open Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-5:30pm, Sunday 12pm- 4 p.m.; “360 Views: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “DOOMSCROLLING,” the 2024 Masters of Fine Arts Exhibition and the 2024 School of Art, Art History, and Design Triennial at MSU Broad Arts The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday; the Casa de Rosado Galeria and the Cultural Center’s “Corazón por La Justicia” are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Ixion Ensemble Theater presents Let’s Fight, a collection of nine conflict-themed short plays, for a two-week period, beginning at 8pm on Friday and Saturday nights at the Sycamore Creek Eastwood Stage 1. Additionally, the Williamston Theater will continue to present “Bright Half a Life,” a six-finalist for the Wharton Center and Michigan Theater Department’s annual Young Playwrights Festival, on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. The finalists will debut their original one-act drama student production of the play, which will be performed in the Wharton Center’s Passante Theater on Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m.
Activities for kids this weekend include weekly story time and parkour workshops at Charlotte’s AL!VE Health Park on Friday at 10 a.m.; Saturday at Impression 5 Science from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The center hosts LEGO building workshops; and bird-themed educational stations celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at Porter Park Zoo on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Peace Education Center’s Mother’s Day Fundraiser for Peace will be held at Allen Market on Friday at 7 p.m. and will include a performance by Lansing band The Dangling Participles, a speech by a representative of the Palestinian American Medical Association, free snacks, Mother’s Day cards and Flowers for purchase etc. More Mother’s Day events will be held on Saturday, including a craft and vendor show at the Meridian Mall from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; a mother-daughter tea party at Raylin Park in Mason on Saturday at 11 a.m.; There will be a Mother’s Day tea and luncheon at 11 o’clock at Okemos Masonic Center, with proceeds going to Haven House and Eli’s Project. Additionally, all mothers will receive free admission to the Porter Park Zoo on Sunday.
The Wild Ones Red Cedar Chapter will host a native plant sale at this week’s Meridian Farmers Market, which will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marketplace on the Green in Okemos. Additionally, the East Ingham Farmers Market will celebrate its opening at McCormick Park in Williamston on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Michigan Archives and the Michigan Genealogy Council will host the annual Barbara J. Brown Family History Symposium Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Michigan History Center. These meetings will also be offered online via Zoom. Local artists and craftspeople will be selling their creations at a Maker Auction at Candy’s Wild Wood in Bath on Saturday from 11am to 6pm.
The Harris Nature Center in Okemos will host an Edible Plant Walk Saturday at 1 p.m., hosted by Peter Carrington, director of the MSU Beale Arboretum. Participants will learn to identify common edible plants and poisonous similar plants found in the wild.
Ben Bailey, former host of the Emmy Award-winning game show “Cash Cab,” will host Q106 and Pure Options’ comedy show Saturday at 8 p.m., Grewal Hall 224. A performance by comedian John Bush.
The MI Drag Brunch will bring drag entertainment to restaurants across the state, with performances at Lansing Brewing Co. on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Finally, Lansing Restaurant Week, a self-guided culinary tour of 36 area restaurants, begins Friday and runs through May 17. Participants can choose as many restaurants as they like. For a list of restaurants and dishes, visit the website.
