Each of Legg’s more than 300 paintings tells the musical story of Birmingham and the state. It could be about Hank Williams’ time in the Magic City, or it could be about contemporary musicians like the beloved Herbert Rotman.
“This is Alabama roots music. It’s the roots music that makes up rock and roll, old time, blues, jazz, country and western, gospel. It gets really subtle. So there are subcategories in there. There’s rhythm and blues, hillbilly music, and everything that feeds rock ‘n’ roll.

Some of Craig’s favorite paintings include Pipe Daddy, Clarence Pointtop Smith, and Ike Zimmerman teaching Robert Johnson how to play guitar.
“It’s a great story. It’s not spectacular, like we’re not Austin or Memphis or Muscle Shoals or something. But we can be very proud of the people who left here, and at that time almost everyone had to Get out of here and go somewhere else. So there are a lot of people on the wall.
