Camarada and Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio: “Finding Time”

Visual artist Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio, who often creates large-scale charcoal murals and installations, collaborates with local chamber music group Camarada and composer Stefan Cwik. Cwik’s composition “Sunstone” for alto flute, string quartet, bass and piano was inspired by the work of Ortiz-Rubio, particularly the way she explores time in her art. “Sunstone” is also the setting for Mexican poet Octavio Paz’s ambitious, beautiful and meandering 1957 poem “Piedra de Sol”.

“I just love the concept of making people fall in love with time, because at the end of the day, I find that it reminds us of our essence—even in a world where there’s so much going on right now, maybe on a personal level or on a global scale, I just think Remind yourself of this fundamental thing, this precious thing that we all have in common, which is that we all have these moments now,” Ortiz-Rubio said.
Otis-Rubio will present a new large-scale work created as a response or dialogue between Cheek’s work and Paz’s poetry. Before the show, Ortiz-Rubio and Zwick will speak with Rafael Fernando de Castro and artist Hugo Crosthwaite, who will also have works on display.
The artwork will only be displayed during the concert.

Linda May Han Quintet

The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library kicks off its winter jazz series with bassist, composer, and vocalist Linda May Han Oh and her quintet. Oh is a charming and artistic musician and performer, and – interestingly enough – was also the inspiration and model for bassist Miho in the Pixar animated film “Soul.”

These concerts are also a great opportunity to appreciate works of art. The latest exhibition, Peter Cochrane’s “The Magician Longs to See,” opens on Friday. Arrive early or check it out during intermission or after the show.

C Your Saturday: SUPERFLEX

ICA San Diego’s monthly special event “C You Saturday” will travel to the North County campus in Encinitas to coincide with a new exhibition by Danish artist collective SUPERFLEX. The group works on video installations and immersive experimental spaces and projects. Titled “Beyond the End of the World,” the exhibition imagines a future in which plants and animals are more involved in society through film installations and associated site-specific ceramic sculptures.

“North: The Musical”

This touring production of playwright Ashli St. Armant’s musical is set in the 1850s and tells the story of a mother and son who escape the South on the Underground Railroad. The musical is based on Saint-Amand’s own family history, intertwined with the true story of escape from slavery.

Mohalet Dance Company: “Taint”

Mojalet Dance Collective, a contemporary dance company based in North County, will perform two works in its first performance of the year, both choreographed by Mojalet’s artistic director Faith Jensen-Ismay. “Taint” is a beautifully crafted look at the abuse of power and the dark side of politics. They will also perform “Suite Sweet and the Pack,” written by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
