Experimental music and arts festival Borders returns to Sunderland for fourth year

Boundaries, Sunderland’s first music festival dedicated to experimental music and art, returns for its fourth edition

This year’s event is a two-day event taking place on 22 and 23 November at various locations across the city, including Sunderland Minster, Pop Recs, The Peacock and The Dun Cow.

Performers from across Mexico, Iran, Norway, the United States, Scotland, Germany, Syria, Turkey, Ireland and England will bring together the best local talent for what organizers say will be an unforgettable experience.

Actors announced so far include: legendary American composer Arnold Drebrat, Iranian electronic and sound artist Rokin Sharafi, Mexican violinist Jibrana Cervantes and Mexican electronic musician Concepci On Huerta, Irish-American composer Natalia Bayliss and Irish producer and percussionist Willie Stewart.

The line-up also includes Taiwanese/American singer Audrey Chen and Norwegian trombonist Henrik Norstebo performing as the duo Beam Splitter, Syrian bouzouki player Mohammad Syfkhan, Scottish improviser Ali Robertson, London’s Dan Jones and the ever-evolving UKAEA , South Carolina jazz duo Black Decelerant, Berlin – a duo featuring sound artists and producers Korhan Erel, Breathing Heavy, Ciaran Mackle on samples and Sam Andrea on sax, and the talented Northeastern jazz trio Archipelago – with more to come.

As part of the festival’s commitment to making art and music accessible, prices have been kept low, with single-day tickets starting at £10 and full two-day tickets costing £15.

Boundaries Artistic Director Graeme Hopper said: “The 2024 program is packed with innovative, pioneering and maverick performers, from legendary older artists to curious and exciting emerging performers.

“This year’s line-up is the boldest yet, with a fully international line-up packed with depth and energy among international acts.”
