The Rochester International Jazz Festival may be the pinnacle event of the year for jazz lovers, but the other 356 days aren’t without live music performances featuring America’s original art form, nor are they without a central list of events.

Enter Greg Bell, a self-proclaimed “recovery lawyer” who has been publishing a music blog Jazzchester website (not to be confused with the festival’s rochesterjazz.com), in use since 2006. He also sends an email to about 1,000 people a week.

Bell’s content has become a mainstay on other local cultural platforms as well; his concert updates have become so integral that Jazz 90.1 utilizes his calendar as its own community calendar.

Dan Gross, WROC-TV’s business and development reporter and Jazz 90.1 Monday night host, said Bell provides a one-stop shop for jazz concert information.

“[He] It provides a central and convenient place for people to discover new jazz in Rochester or find local favorites,” said Gross, who is also a producer of 90.1’s “Bop Shop Live!” “While some of the gig listings or social media pages in the Rochester area are great, Rochester Jazz is the only place dedicated to jazz.”

Bell aimed for unity and believed that no one style could define the entire genre.

“I’m trying to help build the jazz community,” he said. “There’s a big jazz community in Rochester that doesn’t always talk or play or listen together because, for some people, jazz is one thing.”

Bell approaches jazzrochester.com as a passion project in addition to his day job as chief attorney editor at publisher Thomson Reuters.

“It’s different every time,” he said. “There are so many different ways to play – I like the variety.”
