ComFest returns to Goodell this weekend: Here’s what you need to know

Since 1972, ComFest, or Community Festival, has been hosting free, non-corporate and volunteer-run summer “parties with a purpose” celebrating the city’s art and activism.

For more than 50 years, Summer Celebration has helped build relationships between local artists, community organizations, activists and volunteers to raise awareness and promote positive change in the city.

This weekend, the festival returns with a full weekend of live music, local food and beer options, art appreciation, community-focused programming and, as an added bonus, supplemental education about the community organizations working to How you can contribute to making cities a better place for everyone.

If you plan on going this weekend, here are some things to keep in mind.

When and where is ComFest 2024?

The festival begins on Friday, June 28, and runs through the weekend until Sunday, June 30. The festival returns to Goodale Park, 120 W. Goodale St.

What issues are being highlighted at ComFest this year?

This year, ComFest highlights the importance of voter engagement amid ongoing conversations and concerns about current political developments, such as politicians’ attacks on the legitimacy of democratic elections, the state’s predatory gerrymandering and redistricting practices, legislative denial Women’s agency and more.

Organizers encourage attendees to take ownership of the country’s future by voting and fulfilling their civic duties.

What’s new this year?

This year, ComFest is launching two new stages: Sing Out, which will feature performances by singer-songwriters, and a silent disco stage with a live DJ, which will take place on Friday and Saturday nights and allow dancers to dance to music Experience the immersive feeling of being there.

What is happening?

Continuing tradition, KiDSART will offer programming for ComFest kids, including arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt and a competition to design next year’s ComFest KiDSART T-shirt.

At the street market, attendees can wander among a variety of vendors selling local products, learn about community organizations or grab a bite to eat.

Attendees can head to the Peace and Healing Pavilion for a variety of events, including workshops and poetry readings that nourish the mind and soul, or make everyone laugh with comedy performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

What food and drink options are available?

There will be three bars on the festival grounds with a variety of menu options, including special beers brewed exclusively for ComFest by Columbus’ Seventh Son Brewing Co.

New this year is Seventh Son’s non-alcoholic beer selection. Bringing your own alcohol is not allowed. A portion of sales will fund the Community Grants Program, which ComFest awards to local nonprofits committed to serving their communities through social justice, environmentalism and progressive activism.

What is the Woodstock Oral History Initiative and what does it do at ComFest?

Curators at New York’s Bethel Woods Museum continue their partnership with ComFest in their efforts to educate the public about the history of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival by setting up a studio at the Goodale Park Sanctuary to interview attendees as an event part of their Oral History Initiative.

The project aims to collect stories from attendees of Woodstock and other festivals in the 1960s and 1970s, including ComFest. Those interested in being interviewed can schedule a time by contacting oralhistory@bethelwoodscenter.org or registering directly at calendar.com/woodstock-oral-history/columbus-comfest-oral-histories-2024. An entry form will also be posted outside the festival tent.

Are dogs allowed at the festival?

While pets are not prohibited, festival organizers discourage attendees from bringing dogs as the festival environment can be unfavorable to animals and can lead to stress and unpleasant behavior that can lead to distress and potential danger to other attendees.

All dogs in attendance must be on a leash and owners must clean up their bodies.
