New Music Edmonton’s annual event celebrating sonic innovation, Now Hear This Festival kicks off Thursday, running this weekend and next.

A swirl of world-premiere classical compositions, free improvisation, quadraphonic audio-visual soundscapes, performance art and much more, the first event happens at noon Thursday in the City Hall Atrium.

For the fest’s free opening concert, an ensemble of 15 roving saxophones, brass and woodwinds with live electronics and a visual art installation will coalesce as Will Northlich-Redmond’s dreamy piece, Temple of Electyone.

Next up on the menu is a double bill of live electronics by multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Sutton and Brazilian-Canadian artist Lucianne Cardassi, also playing solo piano, at MacEwan University’s Muttart Hall (10050 MacDonald Dr.), 7 p.m. Friday.

This and all subsequent shows are $25, or $20 for members, students and Elders, each show running at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s triple bill at Mile Zero Dance Space (9931 78 Ave.) is free improvisation trio Sol Viator, soundscapes by Sir Kadian (Mika Haykowsky) and Laughter Lily (Shayda Yazdanmehr), and selections from Mari Alice Conrad’s Six Arctic Experiments by experimental ensemble XiME. There’s a cash bar here, ps.

Next Friday, hopping back to Muttart Hall, we find a double bill of Edmonton Saxophone Quartet and U of A piano teacher Roger Admiral, performer of compositions from the 17th century to the present.

Now Hear This wraps with an exciting quadruple bill next Saturday: DJ Noodle Soup and Jia Jia Yong doing live electro and guqin; Mustafa Rafiq singing and playing guitar; Jacob Audrey Taves with more live electronics and video; and Shawn Pinchbeck’s live electroacoustics, as well as his own live video work. Again, cash bar, bring your goth toonies.

You can find tickets for these individual shows at, where you can also grab an all-access festival pass for $60/$70 on the parameters listed above.

See you there!
