Music box creates space for San Diego artists to showcase their art, supports charitable causes

Downtown Music Box, which hosts live music and private events, has partnered with ArtReach San Diego to focus on promoting local artists and their work.

The year-long series, which begins this spring, includes a wall gallery located on the venue’s third floor; the first featured artist is Josué Baltézar.

Baltazar, a Mexican-American, exhibited four paintings: “Heart in the Storm,” “Heart of the Desert,” “Corazon de Santiago” and “Rebirth.”

Canvas prints of all paintings are available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of Baltézar’s work will support ArtReach, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people’s creativity through visual arts and community connections.

Baltézar grew up in Chula Vista and specializes in murals, illustration and branding. He is passionate about helping individuals and organizations committed to social justice.

“We see the Music Box as a celebration of all types of art,” said club owner Joey Rocco. “Whether it’s live music or fine art, we’re proud to be embedded in the heart of San Diego, bringing together local, regional and national talent. As an independently owned business, we’re committed to supporting independent artists in achieving their dreams.

The next local artist to appear on the Music Box is Ian Stiles-Mikl. His work will be on display in early summer. His lifelong admiration for murals and street art inspired his passion for community projects.

We are very excited about Music Box’s ongoing artist series,” said ArtReach Promotions Manager Anna Laroque. “They have created new opportunities for artistic expression and community engagement for some of the artists we work with. We sincerely appreciate the venue’s support and commitment to fostering a thriving arts scene in our community”.

ArtReach has worked with over 60,000 young people.

The Music Box opened in September 2015 and hosts an average of 230 concerts per year. Upcoming shows include RJD2, Yesterdaze and Medium Build.
