New bluegrass festival coming to Los Gatos this summer

Zydeco/blues singer Andre Thierry will perform his final performance on the Los Gatos Town Park Plaza Stage at the inaugural Sounds of Summer Bluegrass and Americana Music Festival on June 22 . The festival is hosted by Los Gatos Music and Arts and kicks off the Jazz on the Plazz summer concert series.

Organizers of Jazz on the Plazz and Los Gatos Music and Arts are launching a new community event: the Summer Bluegrass Festival.

Local bluegrass and Americana artists will perform for free at the Town Park Plaza on June 22, the latest effort by the Los Gatos School of Music and the Arts to host free community events while raising funds to support arts education .

Los Gatos Music and Arts co-founder Jonathan Knowles said the event will kick off the Jazz on the Plazz summer concert series. The first official Jazz on the Plazz concert of the season is scheduled for June 26.

“Like all the concerts we have put on for over 20 years, our goal is to make sure we stay true to our mission of promoting the roots of American music and youth music education, and bringing people together in our community,” said Knowles. , and maybe even do something nice for a local business.

The artists are either from Los Gatos or the Bay Area, Knowles said, and include both established and young artists. Andre Thierry will close the Town Park Plaza stage with his accordion soul music; the show will be followed by a songwriter’s concert featuring Ren Geisick and Chris Motter at the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company. Other artists on the list include the Wildcat Mountain Ramblers, Goat Hill Girls and California Blues Runners.

“One of the things we try to do is provide opportunities for young artists, as well as some of the world’s famous artists, to be on stage,” he said.

Organizers expect thousands of people to attend the day-long event, which will be co-hosted by Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company owner Teri Hope. Under previous concert policy, Knowles recommended attendees bring their own lawn chairs.

The event is sponsored by El Camino Health Center, Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club and the Town of Los Gatos. The latter provided a grant to the Los Gatos School of Music and the Arts to help fund this and other events.

Knowles said the goal is to repeat the event annually to help launch the summer concert series and support their overall mission of promoting music and arts education.

“If we don’t have young people learning what this music is and how to play this music, we’re going to run out of people who know what this music is and know how to play this music,” he added.
