Winters Theater Company brings new era of arts and music to community

The Winters Theater Company has been an important part of the Winters community for over 40 years.

The non-profit organization was founded in 1980 and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. It has become a place where community members come together to enjoy each other’s company and the arts.

“Since their inception, they have produced hundreds of plays in a variety of genres, from small contemporary plays to Shakespearean comedies to holiday feasts and more,” said Kaitlyn Hinds, venue manager at Winters Opera House ) explain.

Hinds said volunteers are “extremely important” to Winters Theater Company and are the backbone of all its success. Many of the volunteer board members have been with the theater for anywhere from 15 to over 40 years.

“They may not be on the board all the time, but they are involved with Winters Theater Company, either helping to produce plays or acting in plays themselves, or directing and everything in between,” Hinds emphasized. everything.

The Winters Theater Company has grown tremendously since the 1980s. In December 2023, they took over the lease of the historic Winters Opera House, located at 13 Main Street in downtown Winters, providing the organization with the opportunity to share more of its work with the community and serve as a platform for other Venues and artists for performing arts groups.

Built in 1876, the Winters Opera House has long been an important location for the performing arts in the Winters community. Prior to moving to the Opera House, most of the theater company’s productions were staged at the Winters Community Center.

“We’re very excited about this because Winters Theater Company has never really had a home,” Hinds said. “So it’s really important to us and the community because not only are we helping to put on more theater performances and this gives us a space to be able to do that, but we’re also bringing in art, theater and music Returning to the Opera House to serve the community.

With the move to downtown, Winters Theater Company also has the opportunity to become more involved in events and partner with other local businesses.

“We now have local wines at our Berryessa Gap and Turkovich locations,” Hinds said. “So if you attend one of our events, you can also get and enjoy local wine.”

Winters Theater Company’s next production is 12 Angry Jurors. The drama is adapted from the 1954 TV series “12 Angry Men” and tells the story of 12 jurors as they deliberate over a murder trial and uncover the truth behind the case. The drama is expected to be broadcast from May 10th to 19th.

Scripts are selected by an election committee, and options are then presented to the board for a vote. Typically, about four to five games are played each season.

Other plays this season include Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” in early August and “The Cat Play” in October. The final show of the season will be a musical. “Robin Hood” will be released in late November.

Hinds said auditions are open to anyone in the community, and be sure to monitor the theater company’s website and social media accounts to find out when they are looking for actors. In the past, she said, they’ve always received a good mix of returning and new actors with a variety of experiences.

With the Big Day of Giving coming up on May 2, Hinds said they hope to use the community’s generous donations to make some renovations and upgrade equipment at the Winters Opera House so they can continue to stage larger-scale productions and Bringing more productions to outdoor orchestras and groups will usher in a new era of music and art at the Opera House.

“We are extremely honored that the Winters community has embraced us, especially over the past 40 years,” Hinds said. “I think it shows us and our community how important they think we are if they continue to support us. We just want to continue to communicate with the community and listen to their voices.

“Bringing music and the arts back to the Opera House is so important and we look forward to continuing to develop this and introduce a theater arts education curriculum, not only for Winters Theater Company but for our community.”
