Calendar Picks: Art and Music in the Life of Steffen Thomas


The 22nd annual Madison Chamber Music Festival will feature a performance honoring the life of Steffen Thomas, the German-born artist and poet who moved to Atlanta in 1930 and spent the rest of his life creating sculptures and expressionist artwork. The show will include the songs of Robert Schumann, whose work has been quoted extensively in Thomas’s art, especially “Eight Songs of Robert Schumann,” a cast bronze sculpture that will be on display during the show.The rest of the show will feature songs from Jesse Freeman’s soundtrack Stephen Thomas: Rock and Chisel, a recent documentary about Thomas’s life and work. The eight-song documentary soundtrack was composed by David Kirkland Garner and is based on specific Schumann works referenced in Thomas’s sculptures and features a cellist, pianist and two singers .
