2024 Edmond Arts Festival to feature more than 150 artists, music, Batman and more

From Disney princesses and giant board games to henna tattoos and a “banjo farm,” the 46th Annual Downtown Edmond Arts Festival promises a wide range of creative fun to the streets of downtown Edmond.

The free event hosted by Edmond City Center on May 3-5 is expected to feature more than 150 artists from across the country, a veritable array of food options and a host of children’s activities, as well as free shuttles to ease parking concerns.

“It started with just a few businessmen saying, ‘Hey, can we get more people downtown?’ So they had artists sit on the sidewalk in front of the businesses, and it grew from there,” festival director Michelle Shafer said.

“The money we make from this will be used to promote downtown Edmond merchants and attract people to shop in downtown Edmond.”

Here’s what you need to know about this year’s Edmond Downtown Arts Festival:

When and where is the Edmond Downtown Arts Festival held?

The festival is open from 10am to 8pm on May 3rd and 4th and from 11am to 5pm on May 5th.

Broadway is closed from Second Street to Campbell Street during the holiday season.

What types of visual art will be displayed and sold during the event?

The juried art exhibition will feature 157 artists from 15 states. Oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, jewelry, pottery and photography will be sold and displayed.

In addition, a dedicated area on First Street will focus on artisans and craftsmen who will showcase their skills in leather, wood, resin, glass, metal and fabric.

Schaefer said this year’s festival features more than 30 new artists.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a problem, but a lot of our artists love our events and they all want to come back. So, out of all the spaces I have, 30 is not a lot. … But we There are artists who have been with us for 20, 30 years and they keep coming back,” she said.

The colorful painting “Flamingo” by Holly Glenn of Liberty Hill, Texas, appears on this year’s holiday T-shirts.

What live entertainment is planned for the 2024 Edmond Downtown Arts Festival?

This long-running music festival draws acts from central Oklahoma, from the Round Barn Ramblers to the Calamity Jane Cloggers.

The main stage under the Festival Marketplace Pavilion will feature performances by the Oklahoma Opry Band and The Wise Guys on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and The Wise Guys on Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. Headliner Lucas Ross performs with the Oklahoma Opry Band.

Ross, a popular local television personality and musician, will return to the festival to perform his musical comedy show “Banjo Farm” on Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m. School groups, dance groups and local bands will also perform on the festival market stage during the three-day event.

In addition, three corner tents will showcase solo performers such as cellist Sam Kahre, Native American musician Tone Gyah Dae and beloved Oklahoma City guitarist Edgar Cruz.

What children’s activities will be offered during the free festival?

The Children’s Tent at the Festival Market will offer free art projects by Keith Coast, face painting, henna tattoos and balloon twisting.

In addition to appearances by Disney princesses, Batman and Spider-Man in the children’s tent, Character Connection Co. will perform a “Tangled” sing-along show on the festival’s main stage on May 4 at 3 p.m.

Games such as giant chess, checkers, Jenga and more will also be set up, and children can play in the chalk garden near the festival market stage.

“The stage and the audience only take up about half of … that pavilion,” Schaefer said. “Last year, I bought a couple of big boxes of chalk and put them out there. The kids were crawling everywhere and they were just drawing on the floor. They loved it.”

Which food vendors and restaurants will be serving delicious food during the festival?

Attendees at the long-running event will find an array of familiar holiday foods on the menu, including funnel cakes, corn dogs and Indian tacos.

Oklahoma vendors participating in the 2024 Edmond Downtown Arts Festival include Kona Ice, Let’s Do Greek, Shuckin’ Delicious Roasted Corn, Wondervan Pops, Daisy Mae’s Icy Creamery, Rickey’s Jerky, Urban Wineworks and Whispering Meadows Winery. Edmond’s Othello will operate a beer trailer and a hot dog cart.

But Othello’s and several other restaurants in downtown Edmond will also be serving holiday-goers, including Oak City Pizza, Railyard Pie Co., Remix Ramen and more.

“They’re offering specials and a lot of these stores that might not be open during the holidays will be open…People want fair food, but then people are also like, ‘Hey, we’re here. I’m not here yet. Dined at this restaurant here, let’s go try it out, so it’s just a way for restaurants – and really all stores – to showcase what they have,” Schaefer said.

How can free shuttles help alleviate parking issues during the festival?

A free shuttle bus from the University of Central Oklahoma to downtown Edmond will run throughout the festival for the third year in a row.

Visitors can park in the UCO parking lot west of First and University and take a 3-minute bus ride to Hurd and Littler, just steps away from the festival grounds.

The shuttle is designed to help alleviate the problem of finding parking in downtown Edmond during events.

“With the construction of the new urban complex that we’re building, a lot of parking spaces are taken up… So, it’s been a challenge in the past. But it’s really been a challenge this year because when all the workers come here , with all the artists coming here, the food truck crews and volunteers coming here, by the time the festival opens, people are going to have a hard time finding a place to park,” Shafer said. “So, it’s just the perfect solution.”
