Jersey Arts Podcast: New Jersey Youth Symphony celebrates 45 years of music education

On Sunday, May 5, the organization will celebrate its success with students and alumni at the New Jersey Youth Symphony’s 45th Anniversary Concert. As a special treat, founding Music Director/Conductor (and current Discovery Founder/Artistic Director) George Marriner Maull will return for the first time to guest conduct a portion of the concert.

We spoke with Mohr and Wharton School of the Arts Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Helen Checklist to discuss the New Jersey Youth Symphony’s history, arts education philosophies and its upcoming anniversary concert.

About the author: Maddie Orton is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker. She has participated in several PBS programs, including: “Take on Fake”, “NJTV News”, “MetroFocus”, “WLIW Arts Beat” and “Treasures of New York”. Maddie is a lifelong theater lover who created the documentary “I Can’t…I Have Rehearsals,” which explores arts education in New Jersey through the lens of high school musicals. She studied theater and American studies at Rutgers University and lives in the great Garden State with her husband and children.
